Let’s look at the best times to post content on social media. By the end of the article, you’ll know exactly when to post content on Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook, three of the top social media channels for e-commerce brands. You’ll also find out when not to post content on social media. The goal is to get your social media content in front of as many people as possible.
If you’re selling anything online, you need to be on social media. Why? Because your customers are. Over 80% of the United States population has one social media account. And more than half of them have at least two accounts. And these people aren’t just uploading pictures of cats and stalking their exes. They’ve got their wallets handy and are ready to buy.
- 70% of business to consumer marketers have acquired customers using Facebook.
- 93% of Pinterest users use the platform to plan or make purchases.
- And on Instagram, over 33% of users have used the platform to purchase a product online.
In sum, there’s a ton of opportunity for online businesses to get sales on social media. And to capitalize on that opportunity, you need to post content when users are online. That way, your brand gets in front of as many eyeballs as possible.
So are you ready to get your timing, right?
Let’s begin with,
What pairs well with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a Caesar salad, and a double cheeseburger? Instagram!
The best times to post on Instagram are during weekday lunch and dinner hours. This means that you should generally post between 11am and 1pm in the afternoon, and between 7pm and 9pm in the evening. Avoid posting on Instagram during your customers’ working hours. Most Instagram users log in with their mobile, so they tend to avoid checking their Insta feeds in the office.
The best days to post on Instagram are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. However, if you only post one day a week, make it Wednesday. That’s the day that gets the best engagement.
Avoid posting on Sundays. That’s when Instagram posts get the least engagement. So unless you have Sunday-specific content to share, consider it your social media day of rest.
Oh, and this is really important: Ignore my advice! After you’ve been posting on Instagram for a few weeks, use your own feed’s audience insights to determine your brand’s best times to post on Instagram.
To do that, go to your Instagram profile and click the hamburger icon in the top right. Hit insights, then go to the audience tab. Scroll down to the followers section.
Here you can see the hours of a particular day when your followers are most likely to be online, and the days of the week that your followers are most likely to be online. Use this data to time your postings, and check for changes in the data every few weeks.
Whenever you post on Instagram, you have the option to post the same content, at the same time, on Facebook.
The short answer is no.
While it’s tempting to be hyper-efficient, the best time to post on Facebook isn’t the same as the best time to post on Instagram.
For maximum exposure to your Facebook community, you’re going to want to post your content at two times. The first is during the week, between 1 and 4 pm. This is when people are likely browsing their newsfeeds during downtime at work.
Overall, the best day to post on Facebook is on Sunday at 3 pm. Weekends get the highest levels of engagement on Facebook. So make sure to plan around these times whenever you calculate your content schedule for Facebook.
With over 1.3 billion daily active users, Facebook is the most widely used social media platform. Its huge and wide demographic of users makes it a great platform for e-commerce entrepreneurs to find their audience and to do their marketing.
So if you only have time for one social media account for your business, consider making it Facebook. And if you have room for a second social media business account, why not consider the next social media platform I am going to talk about today?
Pinterest is a social media platform with high potential for e-commerce store owners. And here’s why: the audience is large and engaged.
In 2018, there were an estimated 175 million active monthly users. 75 million are in the US alone. 93% of Pinterest users said they use the platform to plan for purchases, while 87% said they have purchased something because of Pinterest. And 81% of Pinterest users are women, so if your online business caters to this audience, you should start thinking about how you can get your products and your store in front of them. Beginning with knowing the best times to reach these users.
The best time to post on Pinterest tends to be between 8 pm and 11 pm. Saturdays tend to be by far the best day to post on Pinterest. Sundays work well too.
Work hours tend to be less popular for Pinterest users. Posting during those times may result in lower levels of engagement. Pinterest has different organic capabilities to other social media platforms. Organic reach on Pinterest is determined by the number of keywords in a post, and if they match the keywords, a user has searched for on Pinterest. Knowing this allows you to strategically plan your posts to contain words that are searched for a lot on Pinterest. And it doesn’t cost you anything to enhance like this.
The top searches on Pinterest include food recipes, lifestyle how-to articles, wedding ideas, and fashion inspiration. So if your business is related to any of these search terms, you may want to open a Pinterest account for your online store.
